Domestic Airlines Fleet to Reach 1,400 Planes in 5 Years: A Boost for Indian Aviation
India’s aviation sector is set for a monumental expansion. The fleet size of domestic airlines is expected to soar to 1,400 aircraft within the next five years, As revealed by Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam. This ambitious growth highlights the country’s increasing demand for air travel and the thriving opportunities within the aviation industry.
Speaking at the ‘Giving Wings to Dreams Awards 2024’, an event hosted by Women in Aviation India in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Ministry. Vualnam noted that leading carriers like IndiGo and Air India are fueling the significant growth of the current fleet of 800 aircraft through large-scale orders.
Doubling the Skies
Over the last decade, India’s aviation sector has witnessed phenomenal progress. The number of airports has more than doubled from 74 to 157, catering to a rapidly growing passenger base that has also doubled, reaching 22 crore (220 million) from 11 crore (110 million).
Vualnam emphasized the critical role of women in the aviation industry, including emerging segments like drones. “The aviation sector offers immense opportunities for women, not only in traditional roles but also in advanced technology areas such as drone operations,” he said.
Incentives Boosting Innovation
The government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, launched in 2021, has been a game-changer for the drone sector. With an initial outlay of INR 120 crore, the scheme has enabled beneficiary companies to grow their overall turnover to INR 1,400 crore, marking the success of this initiative.
